FEKLA TOLSTOY
Sometimes you need to get some distance in order to understand the true meaning of something.

In order to feel Russia you need to get away from its cities and travel a couple hundred kilometers and step back a couple hundred years.

It too is difficult to understand Russians without delving into the world of Russian Literature and where better to start than one of its birthplaces - Yasnaya Polyana - the estate in which Leo Tolstoy was born and wrote most of his famous novels.

Yasnaya Polyana still remains a welcoming home to many of Tolstoy’s descendants from all over the world - an estate that combines beautiful nature, old russian traditions and an introduction into the russian soul.

We will be happy to share the weekend with you at our family estate and hopefully show you a slightly different side of Russia.

Information about Catherine Tolstoy: Great-great-great granddaughter of Leo Tolstoy, who spent her childhood in Yasnaya Polyana, where her father worked as the Director of the Museum-Estate. Educated in England at Westminster School to go on to study Art History. Specialist in Russian Art and Culture, as well as Contemporary Art. Over the past three years she worked as Deputy Commissioner of the Russian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale.

August 29th. 1st day. INTRODUCTION TO YASNAYA POLYANA
Perhaps, there is no other place in Russia where the spirit of the 19th century Noble Estate lives on like here. In “Yasnaya Polyana” one of the greatest writers of all time Leo Tolstoy spent most of his lifetime and wrote his masterpieces. Today his descendants continue to keep the classic’s heritage carefully and are ready to share with us the secrets of the famous estate.

_
In the morning we will take a direct train from Moscow to “Yasnaya Polyana”, where our guides will meet us – Fekla and Catherine Tolstoy.
_
_
First we are going to settle in a comfortable hotel and have lunch in a traditional Russian restaurant.
__
__
After that we will go for a walk around Tolstoy’s Estate. We will visit the local greenhouses, where more than 100 types of plants have been cultivated since the 18th century.
_
_
Then we will stop by the Coachman’s Cottage – a wooden house in Russian style. The hostess will tell us about the traditions and customs of life in “Yasnaya Polyana”. She will serve us some tea made with herbs from the estate and sing a few peasant songs.
_
_
Horse-ride through the estate to the blacksmith to try some traditional Russian Crafts – from sawing firewood to making dolls.
_
_
After we will rest a little bit in the hotel and then – off to dinner, which will be served in the Apple Orchard at the Estate. The dishes are made according to Sofia Tolstoy’s Recipe Book.
_
_
During the dinner a group of musicians will sing Russian and Gypsy Romances, that were written by Tolstoy family members and were performed frequently in their house.
August 30th. 2nd day. HISTORY OF THE TOLSTOY FAMILY
_
_
We will start our day with breakfast and then we will go back to the Estate.
_
_
We will explore Leo Tolstoy’s memorial house. In particular, we will get an opportunity to visit rooms that are usually closed: the writer’s room with his personal belongings and his wife’s Sofia Tolstoy’s room.
__
__
After that we will experience traditional entertainment of old Russian Noble Estates – a picnic with local farm products and croquet.
_
_
Planting seedlings of currants and gooseberries in the memorial greenhouse will become the symbolic сonclusion of our trip. Each bush will get a sign with the name of the one who planted it.
